VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

The Mary Affleck Volunteer Award

Each year, at our Annual General Meeting Pacific Immigrant Resources Society presents the Mary Affleck Volunteer Recognition Award to an extraordinary volunteer who symbolizes the spirit of Mary Affleck, for whom the award is named.

Mary Affleck was a devoted PIRS volunteer and supporter of countless community projects. Mary began volunteering with PIRS in 1981 as a children's program volunteer. She served on the Program Committee from 1986 to 1991, when she moved to the Personnel Committee. At the time of her death on February 17, 1994, Mary was Chair of PIRS. However, her greatest love was spending her time with the children in our programs. Mary touched the lives of everyone she met and is remembered by all who knew her as a kind, gentle and capable person. She had a wonderful singing voice and could often be heard leading everyone else. Mary's generosity touched many lives. Those of us who knew Mary will remember her in our own special way.

We present the award to a volunteer in memory of Mary. The recipient demonstrates the qualities and commitment that we admired in Mary. The award was established in 1994 with a generous donation from the Affleck family. Mary's spirit lives on.
