CHILDREN'S PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Volunteers assist staff in providing care and education for children (age 18 months to 5 years) while their mothers participate in PIRS programs. The volunteer helps to provide a safer environment and more individual attention to each child by increasing the number of adults in the room. Many volunteers also bring special interests or talents which can enrich the program. Classes are held at schools, community centres and neighbourhood houses throughout East Vancouver.

Required Commitment

One morning or early afternoon per week, Monday-Friday, for a six-month term (September-December; January-March; April-June).

Sample Duties
  • Help greet the children and encourage them to choose activities that interest them;
  • Assist with the activities around the room as required, for example at the craft table or painting easels, in the housekeeping corner, etc.;
  • Help prepare snacks and interact with the children at snack time;
  • Share any special skills or interests with the group;
  • Assist with special events such as parties or field trips

General Requirements

  • A warm, patient attitude towards children;
  • An interest in child development;
  • An interest in families of various ethnic backgrounds and cultures;
  • An understanding and respect for varying child rearing practices;
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of immigrant families;
  • Police record check ;
  • Medical clearance (doctor's note);
  • TB Test ;
  • Reliability;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Physical ability to work with young children
